The radical change came with the figure of Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the Crown Prince and current Regent of Johor.
His Highness didn't only invest money; he injected a European elite mentality. He unified all the state's football under the JDT brand, built the most advanced training centre in Asia and raised the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, an architectural jewel that is the venue of the Influencers World Cup every year. He also understood that to be invincible on the field, the club had to breathe excellence in every corridor of its offices.
2026: The assault on the Champions League Elite and pride against the champion
If domestic dominance is absolute, the year 2026 has been one of definitive international confirmation. In the new AFC Champions League Elite, JDT has shown that they can look the continent's transatlantic giants in the eye.
Their journey ended in an epic quarter-final against the all-powerful Al-Ahly of Saudi Arabia. The team of Saudi stars had to sweat blood to beat the Malaysians by a tight 2-1. What at first seemed a painful defeat took on incalculable value weeks later: Al-Ahly ended up being crowned champions of Asia. Losing by the minimum to the continent's king, while dominating play at times and being the team with the most shots on target in the competition (6.5 per match), has positioned JDT as an emerging world power.
A date with eternity: August 2026
Although JDT has now equalled the record, the ambition of TMJ and his players has no ceiling. The Malaysian league now enters a brief competitive break, but the whole world has a date marked on the calendar: August 2026.
That's when the league competition will resume and JDT will have the chance to play their 109th match. If they manage to avoid defeat in that game, Johor Darul Ta'zim will become the sole holder of the absolute world record, leaving behind ASEC Mimosas's mark and writing a page that we probably won't see again for another half-century.
